Canada & The U.S. – Neighbors, Friends, Allies

Approaching Issues of Energy, Environment, and Economic Development from a North American Perspective

Monday, Dec.6 | 7:30-9 a.m.

Canadian Ambassador Gary Doer has been named by Business Week magazine as one of the top 20 international leaders on climate change – and he certainly knows what he’s talking about when it comes to successful strategies for cross-border and regional cooperation. As Premier of Manitoba, he worked extensively with U.S. governors to enhance Canada-U.S. cooperation on trade, climate change and renewable energy.  As representative of America’s largest trading partner and secure supplier of imported energy, Doer will discuss the upcoming energy challenges and opportunities faced by the states, provinces, and North America as a whole.

In October, 2009, Gary Doer assumed his responsibilities as Canada’s 23rd representative to the U.S.  Prior to his current position in Washington, Doer served as premier of Manitoba for 10 years, winning three consecutive elections with successive increased majorities.  His government introduced balanced budgets during each of his 10 years in office while reducing many taxes, including a plan to eliminate small business tax.  As premier, he led strategic investments in health care, education, and training and infrastructure.
