NASTD Gives Back to IT High School

By Paul Czarnecki, NASTD Technology Analyst
The National Association of State Technology Directors raised $700 for the Information Technology Academy at Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Ala., through a silent auction at the 32nd Annual Conference and Technology Showcase in Montgomery Aug. 9–12. Each academy student also received an NASTD backpack, donated by conference attendees.
The gesture was a part of NASTD’s dedication to advancing and promoting the effective use of information technology and services to improve the operation of state government.
Forty enthusiastic students, along with their teacher and principal, greeted the NASTD volunteers. The group spent a few hours with students, discussing careers and personal experiences in communications and information technology. They also stressed the themes of education, hard work and career satisfaction. The volunteers also discussed the importance of building a professional network in order to gain experience and opportunities.
More than 150 technology professionals representing 26 states and 77 leading technology organizations gathered at the NASTD conference to network, share ideas and view demonstrations of the latest technology products and solutions available to state governments at the conference. Discussion topics ranged from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to securing infrastructure and “greening” the data center.
