A Statement from David Adkins, CSG executive director/CEO:
The Council of State Governments mourns the passing of former Ohio Senate President Stanley J. Aronoff, who died on Jan. 31 at the age of 91.
Aronoff was first elected to the Ohio Senate in 1966 and served the citizens of the Buckeye State for three decades as a leader in their Legislature. He was a servant leader beyond the halls of the Capitol as well, making his mark as a civic leader, arts advocate and philanthropist. The downtown performing arts center — located in his beloved Cincinnati — is named in his honor.
During his last year as a senator, Aronoff was elected the 1996 CSG National Chair. He was a charismatic and optimistic public servant that truly embodied the special spirit of camaraderie that CSG fosters among state officials. He was smart, strategic, pragmatic and someone who worked successfully to solve problems and make Ohio a better place to live and work.
During my time as a member of the Kansas Legislature, I often crossed paths with Aronoff during CSG meetings at both the regional and national levels. I remember him as always impeccably dressed, never a hair out of place, and as a compelling and humorous presenter at a podium. Aronoff was a gracious gentleman who always seemed to have a smile on his face. He, like the best politicians, had the knack for making a person believe they were the most important person in the room.
On behalf of CSG, I extend our sincere condolences to Aronoff’s family, friends and all who knew him. Although we take comfort in knowing his was a life well lived, we know his loss falls heaviest on the hearts of those who loved him most. Know that you are in our thoughts as you mourn his passing and celebrate his life.
Aronoff’s generous commitment of time and talent to CSG made us a better, stronger and more relevant organization. He believed in CSG and its mission of advancing the common good. We are grateful for his leadership and cherish his legacy which lives on in our work.
We have lowered the flag at CSG Headquarters as we honor and remember Stanley J. Aronoff.
Godspeed, Mr. President. You will be missed.
